Three Nigerians Killed in Separate Incidents in South Africa, Authorities Say

Three Nigerian nationals have been killed in separate incidents in South Africa, according to Nigerian authorities, with the deaths occurring between September 18 and 21.

The three Nigerians were identified as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadu, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka. The incidents occurred in Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Primrose, respectively, according to the Associated Press, citing Nigerian authorities.

The latest deaths bring the reported number of Nigerians killed in South Africa in 2026 to 12, while Nigerian authorities say 112 Nigerians have been killed in the country since 2022.

Nigeria's ambassador-designate to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, condemned the violence and said Nigeria remained committed to protecting its citizens. The Nigerian consulate has also expressed concern and called for South African authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the deaths.

The latest incidents come amid continuing tensions surrounding violence against foreign nationals in parts of South Africa. Earlier this month, Nigeria's parliament suspended official engagements with South Africa in response to violence involving Nigerians and other foreign nationals.

The Nigerian government and diplomatic authorities are expected to continue engaging their South African counterparts as investigations into the incidents proceed.

The circumstances surrounding each of the three deaths remain subject to investigation, and authorities have urged that the cases be properly examined and that those responsible, where identified, be brought to justice.
